Threft, is a Board game that I made for my game project in Year 1 DGDD. It's design to have fun and engaging player interactions, along with an easy to learn gameplay. Players play as the "Treasure Hunters", who are in a battle to see who reaches the "Dimensional Rift" first, and win the game.
Story:
A "Dimensional Rift" opens in the middle of a mysterious Island. It leads to another dimension, filled with Gold, ancient treasures and more. It would definately give a person endless wealth and luxury for eternity. Monsters also crawl out of the Rift, protecting and stopping anyone who tries to take their treasure.
Out of greed, four "Treasure Hunters", once friends, now enemies, fight to get the wealth for themselves. Hunters can set traps, sabotage or even cause Tornadoes that would hinder others from attaining the treasure.
Well, if that wasn't enough, the monsters could be your foe, but an ally as well. Hunters can alter the paths of the monsters, leading them to other Hunters instead. It's a race to see who reaches the Rift first!
Gameplay:
The game revolves around players fighting one another, indirectly. Building walls, setting up traps and causing hazards that not only affect the other players, but themselves as well. Players can also alter the Monsters movement by pushing or blocking their paths, leading the monsters to indirectly attack the other players.
This back and forth cycle of sabotaging other players or even create unforeseen events that hinder his/her own progression, makes a fun and engaging experience between players. As they constantly communicate and interact with one another..
Background information
As this was one of the starting points where I learn to ideate and develop games, I spent alot of time researching and learning about board games. The uniqueness of the cards and game boards, how they work together and how to make them.
There were playtesting sessions as well, where I learn about player interaction with the game, how to make it engaging, as well as making it easier for players to understand the game.
Mechanics:
This is a turn based game, where each players take turn to play their cards or perform certain actions with their "Hunter". After all players have played their turns, the game will proceed to the next phase. It's a continuous cycle until a player wins the game.
Some Key points:
1. Hunters objective is to reach the Rift, which is the center of the game board.
2. Monsters are to prevent Hunters from reaching their goals.
3. Player controls their hunter and its actions.
4. There are 4 different types of cards, that each has its own unique effects.
5. "Player Info Boards" are only used to give information to all players.
Example: What equipment the Hunter is wearing, what types of cards the player is
going to play next. This is to help all players to anticipate and strategise their own
and against opponents moves.
6. Monsters will always move towards the campsite.
7. However, players can force monsters to move in particular directions, by blocking
their paths or using trap and event cards against them.
8. Players can also use cards against other players, to hinder their progress.
