Description:

Disorder is a 3D survival horror escape game that we did for our Final Year Project in SP. Above shows pictures of the mechanics and gameplay elements, as well as concepts and the building blocks for the game.

Story:

After waking up in an abandoned shopping mall, Aiden found himself trapped and alone. He has no idea how he got here or where he is. As he explores around, he find clues and encounters events that tells him, this is no ordinary mall and that he's not alone.

As he moves forward, there are more signs of death, hinting that there's a killer on the loose, but who or what is he? Not wanting to stick around any longer, Aiden has to hurry and find a way to escape the mall, before he meets death itself.

"Disorder" Level 2 Gameplay - Encountering the Psychopath

Gameplay:

The idea of the psychopath and the player, both running around the mall at the same time. That's the gameplay of 'Disorder'. It is difficult to predict where the psychopath will come from and players have to always be aware of his surroundings, as you may never know if the psychopath is creeping up behind you.

The psychopath kidnaps and traps his victims inside an old abandoned mall. He likes to toy with his victims, as well as ensuring that theres no escape. Even when he grabs and catches the player, he does not kill him immedietly. Instead, he scares the player and raises the 'tension'. However, when the player get caught the second time, its game over.

Mechanics:

The unique mechanic of 'Disorder', is the 'Tension' and how it interacts with the player. The player will receive 'Tension' when he encounter events or scenarios that frighten Aiden, making him anxious. The higher the player's 'Tension', the more difficult it is for him to see, as it affects his vision significantly..

The game has other mechanics for survival like running, crouching, pick up items that helps him to disarm traps and a flashlight. There are "clues" that player can interact with to learn about the story or have tips on where to go or what to do.

"Disorder" Horror Game Project - Level 1

Background:

When we started the project, our game was looking more towards a horror movie than a game. So I had to readjust certain features and mechanics to suit the gameplay and flow of the game. We spend alot of effort and time on constructing the story and background of the characters and the abandoned mall.

The hard part was trying to fit all the story elements into the game and helping players to understand. Players were also confused on which direction to go next or sometimes they get lost. So we added clues and hints to guide them, even using light design to show them the way to the right path. We also added short cinematics, to express and show more of the key events that happens during the game. Dialogues and monologues were also added to make characters more alive, as well as to point out certain events if the player missed them.
